User Research
The first step was to define the scope of this project by understanding what “Type A” travelers experience while traveling. The interviews focused on understanding the following aspects of their experiences:
- The demographic of the user, their age and occupation, why they travel, etc.
- Their general travel habits like the planning process, decision making and efficiency in planning
- Their pain points, frustrations and feelings of control while planning
- The features and tools necessary for them while planning, need for customization and automations
- Their problem solving and stress management during this process
- The user behaviour, preferences tracking, communication and time management
- And the competitive landscape from a user perspective
With all this information, this is what the research synthesized as:
User Persona & Journey
I identified 2 types of users and developed personas according to them:
- Persona 1 was of a person who WANTS to plan trips
-
Persona 2 was of a person who NEEDS to plan trips
Competitor Analysis
I looked at travel-related and productivity apps like TripSync, Roamify, Motion, Tripadvisor and Expedia to examine the existing landscape.
Insights
The existing apps in this area are either third-party booking apps or just apps for travel recommendations like activities and food. There is a gap in planning and scheduling apps focusing on travel itineraries.
Key Features
I separated everything I wanted to include in this app into 3 versions for a feasible project:
- Personalizing trip mood and type of traveler
-
Ability to create multiple drafts
-
Itinerary sharing
-
Standardized itinerary formats
-
Rewards for number of places traveled
- Personal points tracking for different airlines, hotels, etc.
- AI generated full day agendas
-
Automated recommendations
-
Local booking instructions
- Calendar syncing
- Comparing features/filters
-
Personalised suggestions
- Social media sync for recommendations
Inspo / Research
I used mostly existing productivity apps to explore the different ways to organise information:
